3D/4D ultrasound is an ultrasound technique used during pregnancy to produce life like images of the fetus. The best time for these scans are between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy, however it is also possible to capture lovely photos of your baby at other gestational ages.
The standard obstetric diagnostic scans are 2 dimensional (2D) scans. Most women are offered a scan at 8, 12 and 20 weeks of pregnancy.
In 3D/4D fetal ultrasound scanning, the sound waves reflected from the fetus are processed by a sophisticated computer program which results in surface-rendered images generally of babies face, hands and feet. 4D scanning is 3D scanning in real time, like a movie.
3D/4D ultrasounds provide a unique experience for expectant parents and siblings to bond with their unborn family member as these images are more
recognizable as little human features than the standard 2D (black and white) images seen in diagnostic obstetric ultrasounds.
It is not uncommon for sonographers performing babies diagnostic scans (counting fingers and toes, and checking your babies heart, brain and spine) at your 20 week ultrasound to become inpatient or frustrated by your requests to perform 3D/4D and confirm gender as these details can become time-consuming.
